First, you must understand the 5 great elements, 10 opposing qualities and the 3 doshas within ayurveda. The 5 great elements consist of earth, water, fire, air and ether. These elements are the building blocks of nature, the 3 doshas and all things in this world.

The 10 opposing qualities are:

The 3 doshas are Vata, Pitta and Kapha.

Vata rules motion and is made up of air and ether. People with a vata dosha dominancy tend have a lean figure, quick mind and creative heart. Vata is also prone to gas, bloating, anxiety and a feeling of being overwhelmed.

Pitta rules transformation and metabolism. This dosha is made up of fire and water. Pitta dominant people have an moderate, athletic shape with strong facial features. They have a quick digestion and an intense personality. To much heat and they can become aggressive, jealous and critical.

Kapha rules body structure, muscle growth and your lymphatic system. This dosha is made up of earth and water and tends to have a larger bone structure and larger features.
